Sometimes You Just Have to Be a Little Bold

To kick off the new year, we made a visit to Gatorland in Florida. It was Lily’s first time seeing so many alligators up close, not to mention snakes, exotic birds, and all sorts of wild creatures. Between walking the nature path, spotting a snake in the wild, and feeding birds in the aviary, she was soaking it all in.
Of course, it wasn’t long before she found the giant fake gator statue meant for photo ops. Without hesitation, she hopped right on. And as she looked back at us with a grin, she confidently said, “I’d totally ride a real one.”
That moment stuck with me.
Lily wasn’t afraid of the idea. She didn’t overthink it. She just let her curiosity and sense of adventure lead the way. And while we weren’t about to let her saddle up an actual gator, her attitude reminded me of something that matters a lot in business: boldness.
Too often, we wait for the perfect conditions before we act. We overanalyze risk, talk ourselves out of opportunities, or hold back when we’re unsure of the outcome. But growth usually doesn’t come from waiting. It comes from showing up with a little courage, especially when the situation is unfamiliar or uncomfortable.
Whether it’s stepping into a new leadership role, trying a new offering, or taking a calculated risk, business often rewards those who are willing to lean in and learn by doing. Not recklessly, but with confidence in your ability to figure things out as you go.
Lily didn’t ride a real gator that day. But she reminded me that sometimes, being bold enough to say “I’d try that” is the first step toward something meaningful.
As we begin a new year, maybe it’s worth asking yourself: Where could I be just a little bolder?
