Lessons with Lily: Teaching the GIFT of the season!

As November ushers in the onset of the holiday season, it’s an opportune time to reflect on the essence of giving, inclusion, family, and thankfulness. As a parent navigating this season’s festivities, my endeavor to impart invaluable life lessons to my daughter, Lily, takes center stage. Amidst the glittering decorations and anticipation of celebrations, teaching Lily about the acronym GIFT becomes a meaningful journey—one that intertwines the spirit of the holidays with foundational values.

G – Giving: Beyond Presents

November heralds the spirit of giving, not merely confined to material presents under a tree. Lily and I delve into the concept of giving back to our community. We engage in activities like volunteering locally or donating to food and toy drives. We discuss the joy of giving to those less fortunate, emphasizing the true meaning of generosity and selflessness during the holiday season.

I – Inclusion: Embracing Diversity

The holidays provide an ideal backdrop to explore the importance of inclusion. Lily learns about various holiday traditions worldwide, celebrating diverse cultures and customs. We discuss how each tradition contributes to the vibrant tapestry of humanity. By embracing these differences, she understands the beauty of inclusivity and the significance of respecting varied beliefs and practices.

F – Family: Cherishing Togetherness

The holiday season is synonymous with cherished moments spent with loved ones. Lily and I emphasize the value of family bonds—creating traditions, sharing stories, and relishing the warmth of being together. We talk about the importance of supporting each other and expressing gratitude for the love and support our family provides.

T – Thankfulness: Cultivating Gratitude

Amidst the festivities, Lily learns the importance of gratitude. We engage in a daily gratitude practice, reflecting on moments both big and small that evoke appreciation. From acknowledging the beauty of nature’s changing colors to expressing gratitude for the companionship of friends and family, Lily absorbs the spirit of thankfulness.

The holiday season serves as a backdrop for instilling these values within Lily. The twinkling lights, festive melodies, and spirit of goodwill provide tangible experiences that reinforce the lessons of GIFT.

As parents, we recognize the significance of imparting these values during this time. We seize every opportunity—be it decorating cookies for friends and family, sharing stories about holiday customs, or simply expressing heartfelt gratitude—to emphasize the importance of these fundamental values.

In a world often bustling with materialism and hustle, the holiday season acts as a beacon, illuminating the path towards cultivating empathy, kindness, and a sense of unity. Teaching Lily the GIFT of life’s essential values during this time isn’t just about the festive cheer; it’s about nurturing a foundation that shapes her character and enriches her life in profound ways.

As the festive season enfolds us in its embrace, let us not only revel in the joy of celebrations but also embrace the opportunity to impart lasting values that transcend beyond the season—a legacy of giving, inclusion, family, and thankfulness that echoes throughout the year.
