Lessons with Lily: Snowmen, Strategy, and the Need to Rebuild

February brought us one of Lily’s favorite seasonal activities: building snowmen. With fresh snow on the ground and a spark of creativity in her eyes, she quickly got to work rolling snowballs, stacking them, and decorating the perfect wintry friend. The result was a smiling snowman with a carrot nose, leaf hat, and plenty of character.
But the joy didn’t end there. A few days later, the weather changed. The sun came out, temperatures shifted, and Lily’s masterpiece started to lean and slouch. Rather than walk away from her work, she grabbed her gloves and rebuilt him. A little more snow here, some reinforcements there, and her snowman was standing strong again.
Watching her do this reminded me how much this applies to business. Just because we’ve built something once doesn’t mean we’re done. Systems shift, markets change, people grow, and what once stood tall may need some attention.
Whether it’s a business strategy, a sales process, or a customer service model, leaders need to revisit and refresh what they’ve built. Not everything needs to be torn down, but sometimes a small rebuild is what keeps things moving forward.
As Lily reminded me this month, it’s not about the first time you build it. It’s about the times you care enough to rebuild it again.
