Lessons with Lily: Sight from a Different Point of View

This month, Lily took to the skies—literally!
Thanks to a family friend who’s a private pilot, Lily had her first-ever experience flying in a small plane. Leading up to the flight, there was a lot of conversation about how this would go, as Mom’s personal flight anxiety started to drift into Lily’s perceptions. Regardless, Lily’s sense of adventure and curiosity took over, and she climbed into the plane with determination and a spark in her eye.
As the plane took off the runway and we soared up into the sky, I snapped a photo of Lily—and just like that, all concern left her. What followed was a chorus of giggles, comments about “the houses for ants,” and an endless stream of “Wows!” From the passenger seat, Lily was seeing the world from a brand-new angle, both literally and figuratively.
Later that evening, she reflected, “It was kinda scary at first, but once we were up there, it was great!” And in that one sentence, she captured a lesson that applies to all of us; sometimes, the best views come after the scariest takeoffs.
This month’s lesson? Don’t let fear keep you grounded. Whether it’s a new adventure, a hard conversation, or just a change in routine, it’s okay to feel uncertain—but push through it anyway. You might just find yourself seeing the world in an entirely new way.
