This month, Lily and I spent an afternoon exploring Hershey Gardens. If you’ve never visited, it’s an incredible place filled with colorful flowers, beautiful landscaping, and carefully maintained gardens. Everywhere you look, there is something blooming.

As we walked through the gardens, Lily naturally stopped to admire the flowers. She posed for pictures, pointed out her favorites, and enjoyed taking in all the colors. Like most visitors, she was focused on what she could see.

And honestly, who could blame her?

The flowers were beautiful.

What most people don’t think about, however, is everything that happened before those flowers ever bloomed.

Long before visitors arrived, someone had to prepare the soil. Someone had to plant the seeds. Someone had to water, fertilize, prune, and maintain the gardens. There were countless hours of work invested before a single flower ever appeared for people to enjoy.

As we continued walking, it reminded me of a lesson that applies not only to gardens, but to life and business as well.

The most important growth often happens before anyone notices it.

We live in a world that celebrates visible results. We notice the successful business, the promotion, the new building, the growing team, or the major accomplishment. What we rarely see are the months or years of effort that happened beforehand.

We don’t see the early mornings.

We don’t see the setbacks.

We don’t see the mistakes.

We don’t see the difficult decisions.

We don’t see the consistency required to keep moving forward when progress feels slow.

Just like a garden, growth often begins underground.

Roots develop long before blooms appear.

As business owners, this can be frustrating. We invest time, money, and energy into initiatives and naturally want to see results right away. We launch a new service, hire a new employee, implement a new process, or begin a marketing campaign and hope the payoff comes quickly.

Sometimes it does.

Most of the time, it doesn’t.

The reality is that meaningful growth takes time. It requires patience. It requires trust in the process. Most importantly, it requires continuing to do the work even when the results aren’t yet visible.

I think that’s one reason so many people give up too soon. They mistake a lack of visible results for a lack of progress.

The gardener doesn’t dig up a seed every day to see if it’s growing.

The gardener continues watering.

The gardener continues caring.

The gardener trusts the process.

Eventually, the growth becomes visible.

Walking through Hershey Gardens with Lily was a reminder of that principle. Every flower we admired was proof that consistent effort eventually pays off. The beauty we saw that day wasn’t created overnight. It was the result of countless small actions repeated over time.

The same is true for our businesses, our careers, and our personal growth.

Success rarely appears all at once. More often, it develops quietly beneath the surface while nobody is watching.

So if you’re working hard and wondering whether your efforts are making a difference, keep going.

Keep planting.

Keep watering.

Keep learning.

Keep improving.

The blooms will come.
